police the suspect's connection to two missing women in vallejo.. a murder suspect killed at a mall after a high-speed chase with police. the suspect's connection to two missing well in vallejo. >> a historic moment in baghdad as u.s. officials formally hand over control of military operations back to the iraq government. >> good morning. it's wednesday, september 1. i'm john kessler. >> i'm sydnie kohara. good morning, everyone. an east bay murder suspect is dead this morning. he is now being connected with killings in two counties. right now bomb squad units are at two different locations. anne makovec is at a home in vallejo where officers made a gruesome discovery. >> reporter: good morning. police have been here all night. they found the bodies of two women in this home here behind me on upland court overnight.

the bodies were chopped up, according to police. police have not positively confirmed yet if they are indeed two missing women in their 60s that have been missing since last week. one of those women did live here. they were both acquaintances of a man suspected of at least two other murders and here is that man. his name is efren valdemoro, 38 years old. now, he was shot and killed by officers last night. officers say that valdemoro fled the chp on a high-speed chase that began in pleasant hill. the chase ended in a shopping center parking lot in richmond. valdemoro was killed inside the store and then his girlfriend was found dead in the car. >> once the suspect came to this location here at the ranch 99 market, he fled on food into the market in which two officers gave chase. once they encountered the suspect he was armed with a

large knife. he was given commands repeatedly to drop the weapon in which the officers were in fear for their lives. they discharged their firearms and the suspect suffered fatal injuries. >> reporter: now, that suspect valdemoro was already being sought by police accused of beating to death a 73-year-old man ricardo sales at this home in hercules. hercules police found sales' body saturday inside his home on crepe myrtle. still missing this morning is sales' son, frederick, 35 years old. he too was last seen inside the hercules home. and he is still missing this morning. and here are the two women that have been missing since last week. valdemoro, the dead accused murderer, has personal ties to 63-year-old rita allen and her friend carol smart. valdemoro was seen driving allen's car recently according

to police. valdemoro may also have rented a room here at the house we're hearing. and we're also hearing that allen's husband has been taken in by police for questioning. so we didn't know whether or not he has a connection to this. right now we know that two women's bodies have been found dead in this home. still waiting for positive identification. but two women were reported missing last week, one of them lived in this home. i know this is all very confusing. it's also very confusing for police at this hour. several different agencies involved in this. and, of course, we are going it stay on this on cbs 5. >> they have a lot of work to do. thank you. a police officer's condition shot in oakland last night has improved and he has had another operation. yesterday's surgery on 39-year- old todd young was successful. young's condition now upgraded to serious but stable. the shooting suspect is still in jail in san diego.

that's 20-year-old andrew barrientos. he is now charged with attempted murder. he is expected to be arraigned in alameda county next tuesday. it's 6:03. september 1st and we are starting the third month without a state budget. lawmakers ended their session last night after debate it would go different plans. governor schwarzenegger said he would not signed a budget without tax and pension reforms. but the government isn't getting any budget plan, neither the senate nor the assembly passing any version yesterday. the governor might call lawmakers back for a special session to work on the budget. there will not be a statewide ban on plastic grocery bans in california at least in the near future. the state senate yesterday rejected the bill that called for stores to stop giving out plastic bags starting in 2012. also called for retailers to charge customers for paper bags. well, the bill's supporters say billions of plastic bags hurt environment but opponents say the bag would cost the state jobs and add to financial

burdens on people and businesses. yesterday's vote, though, is not going to affect the plastic bag bans that are already approved in several california cities. it is 6:05. a transition ceremony this morning in baghdad to mark the end of operation iraqi freedom. vice president joe biden and defense secretary robert gates are there. these are live pictures from that ceremony in iraq. it ushers in the final phase of the iraq war, called "operation new dawn." it shifts the focus of the 50,000 u.s. servicemembers in iraq away from combat operations. now they will prepare iraqi security forces to protect their own country. hurricane earl is now downgraded it a category 3 storm. still prompting evacuations, though, along parts of the north carolina coast. the storm already causing problems for beach lifeguards yesterday. this is off of the coast of kill devil hills. a swimmer was rescued after getting sucked out by a rip current. earl is expected to bring high

winds, heavy rain to north carolina's outer banks by late tomorrow or early friday. forecasters say after that, earl could potentially affect other stretches of the atlantic coast including massachusetts and maine. it's 6:06. let's get you out the door. we are going to check with this weather that is certainly warming up around the bay area, but first traffic. elizabeth, how's it looking? >> we have our first the accident of morning now in oakland, eastbound 580 approaching highway 13. it is against the commute. solo car hit the center divide. so far we'll show you a wider view no delays east- or westbound 580 but watch out for that. chp is heading to the scene. in the meantime elsewhere through oakland 880 we have a camera near the coliseum and everything is nice and quiet. taillights move northbound towards high street looks good towards downtown oakland and southbound traffic moving just as well down the nimitz freeway towards oakland airport and hayward. mass transit is -- it's a "spare the air" day so use mass transit if you can. everything is on time. that is your traffic. for your forecast, here's

focused on letting people know more about the medical options they have. a palo alto committee will meet tomorrow and may take a vote of no confidence on california's high-speed rail project. that would join several cities, palo alto works between san jose and san francisco that have expressed concern about the rail system's effect on neighborhoods. some cities say the rail should be in trenches or underground when going through their neighborhoods, but the high- speed rail authority says that elevated tracks are the only way to keep costs under control. it is 6:12. this morning, a murder investigation covering three bay area cities. >> coming up next, how it all started, the number of bodies that have been found, and what the bomb squad is doing in two east bay cities this morning. well, our weather today, boy, it's going to heat up yet again. here's a look outside. this is looking out towards the bay bridge this morning and that's a beautiful start to the day. clear skies out there we are going to warm up quick, folks. and we got temperatures today near 100 degrees. i have those hot temperatures coming up right after the break. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

good morning. as far as incidents, accidents go, and problems on the road, we have been unusually problem- free so far this morning. so it's a great start to our morning commute our wednesday morning commute. if i can get this button to

work. there we go. a live look past candlestick. northbound 101 traffic you're cruising past hospital curve towards downtown. looks like 280 moving well. all your approaches to the bay bridge still look good, as well. a little bit of slow traffic on the eastshore freeway through berkeley. you can see speeds just under 40 miles per hour. they delay out of the caldecott tunnel and no metering lights, so no delays approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. no slowing yet up the incline. so overall the drive into san francisco from any direction looks good. across the san mateo bridge, westbound 92 roadwork picked up by 6:00 in foster city. we good towards the peninsula. earlier accident in oakland is cleared. it's gone from lanes. chp still heading to the scene but no delays. eastbound 580 approaching the highway 13 interchange is where that accident was. and mass transit is a "spare the air" day, because tracy is talking about temperatures

10 degrees. today tack on another 10. concord hit 87 yesterday, today 96. san jose 86. today 93. santa rosa warming up 10 degrees and san francisco 12 degrees warmer. yeah. let's take a look at some of the hot temperatures we're expecting today. some of them pretty warm but others hot. our seven-day forecast, today part 2, tomorrow part 3. triple- digit highs expected. the bay and the coast are going to hold on a bit.

so the higher temperatures again expected inland. friday things start to back down a bit. we'll cool down just in time for a nice three-day holiday weekend labor day weekend coming in. nice weather expected. that's a look at your weather. back up to you. >> thank you. let's take a look at today's top stories. the suspect in a murder in hercules last weekend is dead after a high-speed chase last night. chp officers shot him after he crashed his car at a richmond shopping center. the man is also believed to be connected to two vallejo women who have been missing for a week. this morning, bomb squads are at two locations checking for possible explosives related to the suspect. fremont police officer todd young is now in serious but stable condition after more surgery yesterday. he was shot while serving a warrant in oakland last week. the suspect is in jail in san diego and expected in alameda county court next tuesday. and it is september and california lawmakers have still

not reached a budget agreement. yesterday though the legislature voted on two budget proposals one touted by democrats the other by republicans. the votes were mostly along party lines and both measures failed to get the two-thirds majority to pass. it's 6:20. another new announcement by apple this morning. coming up cnet editor brian tong joins us to explain why it's all about the music. you can expect new gadgets to be ,,,,,,,,,,

[ laughter ] >> what are they coming out with today? is this their yearly thing? >> this is their yearly music event. so one of the first things we expect is ipods always super popular. they are losing market share because of the iphone took over and can do everything but the ipod touch what we are expecting to see is their new device have the crisp display and the face time so this is that video conferencing currently the iphone 4 is the only one where you can hold your phone and talk with people with this face time but now the ipod touch will be one of those things. apple, you know, said when they first released the apple 4 that they would ship over 10 million face time equipped devices so the ipod touch naturally has to be one of those. that's what we expect to hear from them today. >> is that the only thing? i have been hearing rumors about music and things. >> one of the other device they have that's popular for people on the go the ipod nano still hasn't got a scroll wheel and button. but now they are looking to

release a nano that's 1.5" by 1.5". it's going to be an all touchscreen device. so something about this binge. they are making the nano smaller. >> your big fingers, we'll see how they pull it off. >> didn't they buy a music online music service la la? >> they recently acquired la la. we don't know how that factors into the announcement today yet because there have been no signs to show that a music subscription service is coming out but one thing we are expecting to see is a tv subscription service or not, sorry, tv streaming from a.m. and apple tv has been rumored but it looks like it will be announced today a set-top box and essentially you will be able to stream your personal content like movies, videos and rent for 99 cents tv shows 24 hours after they come out. >> wow. so just the latest shows and you don't want to wait. 99 cents.

court in vallejo. two women's bodies were found here in this house behind me. now, the bomb squad just pulled up here as you can see to this location. let's put the bomb scare aside and go back to the murders. the two bodies were found here in this house chopped up according to police. this man is accused of three murders. efren valdemoro 38 years old shot and killed by officers last night. now, officers say that valdemoro led the chp on a high- speed chase that began in pleasant hill that ended in a shopping center in richmond. valdemoro was killed inside the store by officers. his girlfriend was found dead in

lived in the home on upland court in vallejo. now another twist to this story, allen's husband her with us was taken into the police station for questioning. it's confusing. we'll follow it for you on cbs 5 and cbs5.com. >> thank you, anne makovec. let's go to richmond now. anne mentioned a couple of bomb squads looking at things. someone in richmond where the suspect was killed by chp officers last night. trent cross joins us from chp. >> bomb squad was here because we believe there was possibly some type of explosive device

so the bomb squad determined there were no explosive devices in the car. >> okay. can you -- have you learned anything more about the connections of what's been going on here? >> well, it's still early in the investigation. so what you have is the vallejo police department along with the california highway patrol, hercules, and the contra costa district attorney's office all trying to put the pieces together to determine how this thing initiated from beginning all the way up to this point. but what we do know so far is that there are multiple deceased victims including the suspects, and there's a lot of confusion at this point. but we're trying to get these pieces together as quickly as possible. >> we are talking almost about three different investigations. i mean, how did this pursuit of this suspect begin? pleasant hill police department asked the chp to pursue the suspect on the freeway.

we chased him from pleasant hill to richmond. once he stopped here in this asian market parking lot he fled from the vehicle on foot into the market. two chp officers confronted the suspect in which he was armed with a large knife. the suspect was given multiple commands to drop the knife in which he failed to do so and the officers were in fear for their lives and so they discharged their firearms in which the suspect was struck and suffered fatal injuries. and so while this is taking place, additional chp officers outside the market located a female unconscious inside the suspect vehicle so they pulled her out immediately tried to render aid and determined that she had been deceased for a while and so she was dead inside the vehicle. >> sergeant, thank you very much. sergeant trent cross with the chp. it is 6:35. a transition ceremony to mark the end of operation iraqi freedom ended just moments ago in baghdad. vice president joe biden and defense secretary robert gates were there. this ushers in the final phase

so what we're told from some members of the kcbs phone force that smoke may be visit as you approach the castro valley y in that area. chopper 5 is heading to the scene so maybe in the next few minutes we get an idea of how big the fire is and if it's impacting traffic at all in the area. live traffic camera of the bay bridge toll plaza where they turned on the metering lights a couple of minutes ago so we are seeing delays to the end of the parking lot just in the busiest lanes and we have a new accident in petaluma. southbound 101 approaching petaluma boulevard south three to four-car crash it is off to the shoulder. no big delays according to the our sensors. that is your traffic. for your forecast, here's tracy. >> hey, thanks, elizabeth. boy, it is going to heat up today quite a bit. here's a look at our sunrise. not here just yet. but looks good, doesn't it? 6:39 sunrise. this is our camera from mount vaca. forecast for today, clear skies for the morning. and that's going to lead us to warmer temperatures today. mid-80s in san francisco.

maps show you where this is near the castro valley y. metering lights are on at the bay bridge toll plaza and big delays for this time of the morning backed up to the west grand overcrossing in all lanes now. and in petaluma, we still have this accident there, it is off to the shoulder. southbound 101 approaching petaluma boulevard south. three to four cars were involved in this crash. and so it's a little slow there as you head past the accident scene. it sounds like chp is still on the scene there but off to the shoulder again. not blocking lanes. and at the golden gate bridge, hey, no fog. that's a different story from the past couple of days. so visibility is great all across the span. a quick look down the eastshore freeway, we have no delays interest ashby all the way down towards the macarthur maze. that is your traffic. for your forecast, here's tracy. >> hey, thanks, elizabeth. well, good morning! it is the middle of the week and today is a day of change. changes with your temperatures. here's a look out toward the bay bridge and that's our sunrise coming up over the east bay. clear skies out there this morning. and not a cloud in sight. we are going to warm up quickly

today and that's why we're expecting triple-digit highs. a few degrees shy but close enough. here's a look at what you can expect out the door. clear inland, clear around the bay, clear for the coastline. lower 50s to the lower 70s out the door. for the afternoon, sunny, hot, but today is a "spare the air" day. keep that in mind. lower 90s to the upper 90s inland. around the bay, the lower 80s to the lower 90s for the bay. yeah, that's warm. warm to hot temperatures with plenty of sunshine. and for the coastline, nice. lower to the mid-70s, plenty of sunshine expected. we are warming up yet again today. yesterday we warmed up about 10 degrees inland. today tack on another 10. concord hit 87. today 96. san jose 86. today 93. mid-90s in santa rosa and 84 degrees in san francisco. 12 degrees warmer than yesterday. more warm temperatures to go around:

friday's employment report will say. >> this morning's report deals with private employers and here now is jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. hi, jason. >> good morning, john. good morning, sydnie. we have a couple of reports out affecting the job market this morning ahead of that labor department report for august on friday. some mixed results in there. adp, which tracks private employers, says private employers cut 10,000 jobs in the month of august. that is not good news, although they were expected to be even bigger cuts than that and challenger said that there were fewer planned layoffs last month than what occurred the month before. so a little bit of good news there but really it shows the job market is stuck at best in neutral. not expecting any good news on friday. the unemployment rate probably increasing to 9.6%. investors trying to make out what to come from that news, although this morning the market is trading a lot higher mainly based off better economic news out of china and australia indicating that

perhaps the global slowdown is not quite as bad as what we're seeing here in the united states. the dow up by 112. nasdaq up 28. s&p higher by 13. a lot of wheeling and dealing going on. reports that burger king could be up for sale in talks with some private equity firms. burger king has a market cap of about $2.2 billion went public in 2006 but it's been struggling lately sales down over 2% in the last fiscal year. and today we'll find out if dell comes back to the table and ups its bid over hp's $2 billion offer for fremont data storage company 3par. >> when are they going to stop doing this is that when are they going to pull the trigger? >> you mean the bidding? >> yeah. >> they have three days before 3par's board can formally accept hp's offer. a lot of analyst believe that dell will come back to the table. hp's current offer is almost $1 billion more than where dell started out. >> wow. >> both companies really want cloud storage capabilities. >> thank you very much, jason

man... shot to death by c-h-p last night after a high speed a number of bodies found throughout the bay area could all be linked to one man shot to death by chp last night after a high-speed chase. anne makovec is in vallejo to sort it all out. ann. >> reporter: very confusing story. here's what we know right now. two bodies, the bodies two of women, were found inside this home on upland court here in vallejo overnight. mutilated, according to police. police have not confirmed yet if they are indeed two missing women in their 60s. one of those women lived here and both acquaintances of a man suspected of two other murders. here's that man, efren valdemoro, 38 years old, shot and killed by officers last night after leading them on a high-speed chase in richmond. he was killed in a store and his girlfriend was found dead in a car. valdemoro is also cluesed of
